Mound House

Aside from its obvious natural beauty and activities available along the oceanfront, Fort Myers Beach offers unique ecological and cultural experiences as well that will enrich your stay. Head to Mound House for a chance to explore this area’s historical and archaeological roots. Filled with interesting historical and archaeological experiences, a trip to the Mound House can help you greater appreciate the richness of the area.

Explore Mound House

Step back in time to 1921 as you step into the Mound House in Fort Myers, the oldest standing structure on Estero Island. This home, now a museum, sits atop an ancient Calusa Indian Shell Mound looking out over Estero Bay. Participate in an educational program or join a botanical or archeological tour to learn more about the prehistory of Florida, Calusa Indians, and early pioneer settlements. A particularly fascinating feature to explore is the underground room that gives a window into the ways of life of the Calusa people. The Calusa Indians built shell mounds, known as middens, for higher and safer ground from high tides and hurricanes. Part of this has been excavated, allowing visitors to experience it firsthand.

Nature Activities at Mound House

In addition to the historical value of visiting Mound House, activities such as boat rides, hiking, and eco-kayak tours are also available. Boat tours are offered from October through May and leave from Fish Tale Marina, traveling Estero Bay to both Mound House and Mound Key, catching sight of dolphins, manatees, and birds along the way. Taking an eco-kayak tour is another way to explore the area by paddling Estero Bay and Hell Peckney Bays. View birds, fish, manatees, and dolphins as you learn more about the area from your guide, who is a biologist, naturalist, and Mound House Environmental Educator.
